Many of us heard about the factory that collapsed in Bangladesh where the death toll was 1,129 with over 2,500 injured (1), but did you hear about the clashes between factory workers and police in Cambodia (2)? As part of a nationwide strike, workers took to the streets to demand a wage increase and improved safety conditions. They were met with open fire from police. We don't realize how much power we have here in "the West", but if we were prepared to pay slightly higher prices, or if we simply refused to buy goods that were made in unsafe conditions, without enforcing human rights, then it would be so.
The customer is always right, and I say that the people that make my t-shirts and underwear deserve a living wage and the right to go to work without fearing for their lives. In this day and age we certainly have the technology, the financial resources, and the ability to make this happen - we as consumers simply need to create the demand, and it will be supplied. Basic economics.
Less is more, and sometimes a little less fabric on your body on a hot day is just the thing to cool you off. If you help combat human rights abuses at the same time, I say that's a win-win.
For those of you who like some snug comfort around your hips, a quick internet search for "sweatshop-free underwear" will ring in dozens of hits, so have at'er!
